My art practice is primarily concerned with space and shadows, composition and exploration. Although entirely focused and dedicated on the work I am pursuing, one of my favourite pastimes remains day dreaming… I had a significant breakthrough with my work when I read this quote by Donald Judd. “Design has to work, art doesn’t”. This gave me the freedom to make things that didn’t have to function. I found this enormously liberating as I’d always had to be useful and practical in my work. At last I was able to say ‘it doesn’t have to work’.

I also draw inspiration from the Japanese architect Tadao Ando whose buildings embrace minimalism, space and natural light. On a trip to Japan in 2024 I experienced the feeling of occupying some of his buildings including the Chi Chu Art Museum on Naoshima Island (see the Home Page). What Ando achieves through his architecture is something I think about in my own practice.
